PWID + COVID-19 Data Collaborative

PWID + COVID-19 DATA COLLABORATIVE

3.7 million

estimated number of PWID in the U.S. in 2018

There are nearly 3.7 million people who inject drugs (PWID) in the U.S., more than 5x the number in 2011. This growing population has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the full impact of the pandemic on PWID health is still unknown. The goal of the PWID+COVID-19 Data Collaborative is to gather and analyze available data to better understand how the pandemic has affected the health of PWID. Through this data sharing and collaboration, we can improve PWID health by reducing health risks and leveraging positive pandemic-related changes, e.g., in policies and service delivery modalities.

Our collaborative is comprised of leading researchers, advocates, and practitioners, as well as federal, state and local government stakeholders. We are collectively dedicated to measuring and addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on PWID.  We need researchers and PWID-related service organizations like you to join our collaborative! Explore our site to learn about the PWID+COVID-19 Data Collaborative, or email us at pwidcovid@emory.edu.

The Problem

We don’t yet know how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health of PWID, a population with substantial pre-pandemic health risks. This limits our ability to respond. Data on PWID health are insufficient and especially limited during the pandemic period.

Our Response

The PWID + COVID-19 Data Collaborative was created to gather existing data on PWID health indicators and to assess change pre- and post-pandemic start. We aim to collect and combine summary data from research studies, surveys, and routinely collected service data. These summary data will be analyzed together and made available to data contributors and the public.

How You Can Help

Join our collaborative, share summary data on the impacts of COVID-19 on PWID, and contribute toward a better understanding of how the pandemic has affected PWID health.
